Nitrogen Oxides are created during the combustion process when air (which is 78% nitrogen, 20% oxygen and 2% inert gases) is broken down or oxygen combines with nitrogen in the fuel. Nitrogen Oxides are a byproduct of all combustion processes whether is is gasoline in your car, leaves burning in your backyard, or a power plant burning oil, coal or trash for fuel. Trash-to-energy plants also create Nitrogen Oxides. We reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides by utilizing selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) technology. At this plant, we utilize urea injection as our SNCR technology. We have a permit limit established by the Department of Environmental Protection of 205 parts per million of Nitrogen Oxides in our emissions (corrected to 7% oxygen) averaged over the day.
